Sullivan – Red Ink 2006 (Napa)

Two things:  If you are looking for wine reviews that talk about the 10 different flavors in a wine (chocolate, boysenberry, etc) then I am probably not your critic.  I am not even sure what a boysenberry is or what it tastes like so some things are lost on me.  However, if you want an honest opinion of if a wine, restaurant, cigar, etc was good then we should get along fine.  With that being said, everyone’s palate is different so you may not like the wines I like but if I get you to try it you just might like it and half the fun is hearing the stories, right??

So this is review of Red Ink.  I will do a separate review of Sullivan’s winery not because of my last name but because it really is one of the best winery experiences I have ever had.

Red Ink came in my last wine club shipment from Sullivan Vineyards.  It was a 06 and I can tell you that it needed more time in the bottle.  Not that it was not good, it was but it was not worth the cost at this time.  You could tell when you took the first sip that the wine almost smelled fresh.  Not that fresh is a real wine connoisseur term (see comments above) but it just didn’t smell like it was from some dark, mysterious wine cellar.  However, when you drank it you could tell that it was good underneath that original smell.  The taste of the wine was very pleasing (no boysenberry that I know of) and was smooth to the taste with no after taste of any kind.

Once you open the bottle you can’t re-cork it so I finished it, or at least that is my excuse.  I did take two nights and for those that know me that is a long time, to finish this bottle so I did not guzzle, just enjoyed.  I wish I could have laid it down for a year or two to see if it would have had that mature cellared smell and more complex yet smooth taste but oh well. Wine is meant to be drunk and I did what I was meant to do.

I would recommend without question the Sullivan Winery and their wines.  I have yet to have a bad time with either.  I have even included some of my own pictures from my trip there.  See if you can guess which ones are from the winery web site and which ones are mine.

Also look for my review of my visit to Sullivan’s.  It has a couple of twists you won’t want to miss.
